Maureen's Retirement!

After a number of years, Maureen has decided to retire at the end of November! She is going to be SO missed... luckily, she still wants to teach some Pfaff and Janome clubs, so she will remain a part of our lives, but the store just won't be the same. Any big ideas on how to send her off properly??? Drop me a line at qdfabrics@johnsonssewing.com and give me some hints! Thanks!

Stitching to Dye

Hi! I have been inspired by several books, such as "Stitching to Dye" and "The Painted Quilt", and decided to get experimenting. So, first, I found a small quilt that was machine quilted, with a white-on-white background. I next dyed the piece - oranges, yellows and blues. That was interesting, but not too dynamic. Next, I used Tsukineko Inks and thickener to paint in a lot of the quilting motifs. Getting more interesting .... But, the sun was out, so I took the piece outside again and overdyed the entire piece blue! Finally, once dried and color-set, I took Shiva Paintstiks and rubbed yellow, gold and copper colors over some of the motifs.

What would I do different next time? I think that if I had inked the motifs first while the background was still white, the colors may have been more dynamic. Then I could have done a few dye layers on top of that.

What do you think???

Stitching to Dye - experiments!

Do you like the colorful strip-pieced quilt posted below! Join Heather's Seminole Club and learn to make one for yourself! The club meets on the last Monday of every month from 6:00 to 9:00. This quilt is also quilted in sections with the borders added after - a great technique that Heather has mastered and that you appreciate. Heather is our talented Machine Quilting teacher as well, and you will appreciate the dancing couples that she quilted on this piece. Over 60 hours of work went into her motifs - best viewed in person from the back of the quilt!

Hi! Everything is settling down and getting ready for fall - and do we ever have a busy schedule ahead! Our 10th Shop Hop North is scheduled for September 11, 12 & 13th. Look for specials in all the stores participating! For example, bundles of 10 fat quarters will only be $19.99!

We are also planning our second Customer Appreciation on September 22 (south store) and September 23 (north store)! Join us for supper, snacks & surprises as we continue to celebrate Johnson's 40th year!

Creative Stitches is October 2nd and 3rd at the Mayfield Inn. Quilter's Dream will once again have a large space, complete with demos and many displays! We are looking forward to hosting Leslie Chaisson, an Albertan with her first book out from Martingale! She will be in the booth doing book signings, and then in our south store on October 4th doing a special class that you don't want to miss.

Check out our website at www. quilters-dream.ca and click on the link for our fall class brochure. We have three new teachers and many new clubs and classes to offer!
